BACKGROUND: As a 15-year-old Smith visited short tracks on Saturday nights to catch the local racing action in his homtown of Chicago. After a move to North Carolina, he found a gig as an automobile mechanic. Soon after, a friend offered him a chance to build racecars and he jumped at the opportunity. After five years, however, the long commute to the shop started wearing thin, so Smith took a position with a mobile exhibit corporation. In retrospect, it was a good move - he gained skills in metal fabrication that would serve him well. After leaving the company he watched the company grow in size at the expense of solid customer relations. This made him decide to open RAM Fabrication in March of 1999 after an eight year run with the other company. The company has been going full speed ever since, providing everything from custom design promotional equipment to 53-foot turnkey semi trailers.
